Eco-Committee

At D’Eyncourt Primary School, our Eco-Committee is a pupil-led group that plays an important role in promoting environmental responsibility and sustainability across our school. The committee is part of the Eco-Schools programme, and forming an Eco-Committee is the first of the Seven Steps needed to work towards achieving the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag Award.
Role and Responsibilities
The Eco-Committee acts as the driving force behind eco initiatives at D’Eyncourt Primary School, helping to ensure that environmental awareness is embedded into everyday school life. The committee’s key responsibilities include:
- Leading Environmental Reviews: Assessing how environmentally friendly the school currently is, focusing on areas such as energy use, waste, water, and biodiversity.
- Developing Action Plans: Creating realistic and achievable targets to improve sustainability based on the findings of the environmental review.
- Monitoring Progress: Regularly reviewing actions to track progress and evaluate the impact of eco projects.
- Communication: Sharing updates, achievements, and eco messages with the wider school community through assemblies, noticeboards, newsletters, and classroom discussions.
- Creating an Eco-Code: Developing a clear mission statement that reflects D’Eyncourt Primary School’s commitment to caring for the environment.
Membership and Meetings
- Pupil-Led: The Eco-Committee is led by pupils and supported by designated staff Eco-Coordinators.
- Representation: Members are selected from different year groups to ensure the whole school is represented.
- Selection Process: Pupils who wish to join the Eco-Committee are invited to apply for the role. Children first read a job description to understand the responsibilities involved. They then complete an application form explaining why they would be suitable for the position and sharing their ideas on how they could help make our school more eco-friendly.
- Meeting Frequency: The Eco-Committee meets regularly, typically at least once every half term, to discuss ideas, plan activities, and review progress.
Benefits for Pupils
Taking part in the Eco-Committee helps pupils at D’Eyncourt Primary School develop valuable life skills and environmental awareness, including:
- Leadership and Teamwork: Working collaboratively to plan and deliver meaningful projects.
- Decision-Making Skills: Identifying environmental issues and deciding on effective solutions.
- Environmental Understanding: Learning about global challenges such as climate change, recycling, and plastic pollution.
- Confidence and Empowerment: Giving pupils a voice and the opportunity to make a real difference within their school and local community.
