Games 4 Reading Book Quiz

Every year, D’Eyncourt enters Wolverhampton Library Service’s Game4Reading Book Quiz. This year, we had a tough battle as D’Eyncourt had been the reigning champions for the last three years.

The quiz involves six children in years 5 and 6 reading six books and answering tricky questions about them against other schools across the city. The books are chosen with different themes, characters and genres each year and it offers the children the experience of reading brand-new books by new and exciting children’s authors. There is also a picture round (involving book characters and emojis!) and a round based on four children’s authors and the children have to learn facts about each.

The children who were on the team spent time at home reading the books initially and then spent many lunchtimes and break times quizzing each other and researching the different authors and characters that they could be questioned about. The team worked so well together and willingly gave up their own time to revise.

The first rounds took place online and D’Eyncourt faced some tough competition against local primary schools. They managed to successfully get through to the semi-finals where the competition stepped up with more challenging questions against the top 9 schools in the city. After a nail-biting tie-break, D’Eyncourt snatched their way into the Grand Final by half a point! The children were ecstatic to get through – there were even tears!

The final, which was in person, took place at East Park Library and parents and carers of the quiz team were invited to watch. With ‘University Challenge’ like tension, the team battled it out against Woodthorne Primary and Dunstall Hill where the questions were so difficult and it was so close at the end! The team ended the competition with a bronze medal which was an amazing achievement. They each received a £10 book token to continue their love of reading!

What is so special about this competition is the amount of support the team gets from the rest of the school. The other children were so invested in the competition and wanted to know how the team got on after each round. Reading is actively encouraged at D’Eyncourt as is reading for pleasure and the amount of enjoyment the children get from entering this competition is immense. The quiz team are exemplary members of our school community and they performed brilliantly.

We have already organised another reading quiz involving the whole of KS2 ready for World Book Day 2025 with Wolverhampton Library Service so more children will have the opportunity to read and face the challenge! Of course, we will be entering the Game4Reading Book Quiz again next academic year – will we be triumphant? Only time will tell!
